What inspired you to work with Equity in Medicine?

I was inspired to apply for the initial grant from the Canadian Medical Association in 2018 to help others feel less alone on their Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) journey. My goals were to educate on EDI, to build a community of support, and to empower individuals to act. Each one of us can affect positive change!

Name a physician leader who inspires you and why?

I am inspired by Dr. Pauline Alakija, an Alberta physician, who bravely began the uncomfortable conversations within our medical organizations several years ago. Her early commitment to EDI and anti-racist action has helped us "move the needle" in Alberta. Dr. Kaylynn Purdy is a resident physician leader whom I admire tremendously. Her courage to speak up to power, lead change where she stands, and her generosity to sponsor others is both inspiring and hopeful.

What is your hope for physicians with respect to EDI in the future?

I would like to see EDI embedded within our medical organizations and institutions so that learners and physicians have equitable opportunity to grow to their full potential.
